Beaujolais
Located south of the Maconnais, it is the heart of the greatest gastronomic centers of the world. Most of the wines are fresh, fruity, uncomplicated and light-bodied and 100% Gamay which thrive in the stony granite based soil. Beaujolais Villages made in the Northern part of the region are fuller and more substantial and blended from grapes from some 39 designated villages. The Beaujolais is only 34 miles from North to South and 8 miles wide but it pumps out millions of cases of wine, most of which is sold in the third week of November; Beaujolais Nouveau. A phenomenon of the region, Beaujolais Nouveau is a young (just 6 weeks old), un-aged wine that serves as the barometer of the quality of the vintage.
There are 10 crus of the Beaujolais: Saint Amour, Julienas, Chenas, Moulin-a-vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Regnie, Brouilly, Cote de Brouilly and Coteaux de Lyonnais. Each of these crus produced light, lively, easy-drinking wines with differences attributed to the individual producers according to their house style.
The Prosper Maufoux wines from this region include the following: (click here to view a map)
